The Parangarahu Lakes, located along Wellington’s south-east Coast, comprise Lake Kohangapiripiri
and Lake Kohangatera, which are significant features of the East Harbour Regional Park. Since 2015,
the lakes have been jointly managed by Greater Wellington Regional Council (GW) who administer
the lake catchments, the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust (PNBST) who owns the lake beds and
esplanade reserves and manages these via a Rōpū Tiaki (guardianship group), and Department of
Conservation (DOC) who is responsible for the water column as a scientific reserve. The lakes are
included in a comprehensive co-management plan (PNBST and GW 2020). Indigenous flora is valued
in the co-management plan and control of pest plants is sought where these interfere with the
oranga of the lakes area.
