Māori Constituency poll information

Why are we having a poll?

Under legislation a poll must be held during the 2025 local elections to decide the future of the Māori constituency.

  • If the majority vote to continue, the Māori constituency will remain in place for the 2028 and future elections.
  • If the majority vote against it, the constituency will not exist for the 2028 and 2031 elections. However, Council could choose to establish Māori constituencies for the 2034 elections and beyond.

All electors in the Wellington Region will be able to vote in this poll as part of the 2025 local elections.

What is the poll asking?

For those regional councils subject to a Māori constituency poll:

“I vote to KEEP the Māori Constituency / I vote to REMOVE the Māori Constituency”
